Forget about the usual dark and moody vibe associated with “gothic romance.” Selena Gomez surprised everyone with a fresh take on the trend that’s more haute couture than Hot Topic.
Instead of the expected dark shades like black or burgundy, Gomez opted for a lighter and more versatile manicure just a few days after flaunting a glossy black patent leather look at the 2024 Golden Globes.
Her go-to manicurist, Tom Bachik, curated her latest set with a soft, plushy neutral pink. He shaped Gomez’s nails into a gentle almond form and applied several coats of Aprés Nail Gel Couleur in Gothic Romance, described by the brand as a “dark pink.” Personally, I’d say it’s more of a taupe-toned rose with neutral undertones, steering away from the typical gothic aesthetic. Nevertheless, it’s a lovely and sophisticated shade suitable for both red carpets and Monday morning meetings. It’s not the flashy Barbie pink or bubblegum pink, but rather a subtle and refined tone, more like a “my nails but better” vibe than something you’d find at Hot Topic.
Gomez showcased this chic manicure at a Rare Beauty event on January 10, where the overall aesthetic was described as “chill and relaxing.” The spa-like shade perfectly complemented the event’s atmosphere. Gomez also switched up her hairstyle for the occasion, ditching her long hair and warm blonde highlights for her classic long brunette bob. The casual waves and soft movement of the hairstyle matched seamlessly with the sweet and calming nail color.
While Gomez’s manicure might not evoke the dark and eerie vibes typically associated with gothic romance novels, it does evoke a feeling – the desire to switch up my own nail color ASAP!
